    Causes of Alcoholism

    Nipping Alcoholism In The Bud

Alcoholism is a severe drinking disorder that can affect anybody of any race, sex, and age. While some individuals are more prone than most, understanding what alcoholism is and how one develops the condition is necessary to take note of in order to avoid falling into its vicious trap.

Alcoholism is actually an individual's extreme physical, emotional and psychological dependence on alcohol and its perceived effects. Physically, the dependence stems from the body's physiological functions, particularly the central nervous system, that becomes accustomed to the effects of alcohol in the system.

Alcohol has a dampening effect on the brain's functions, making individual's under its affect become less inhibited and more relaxed. When the central nervous system has gotten used to this and when the effects beginning to wear off, anxiety and restlessness is felt by the individual. This in turn urges him to induce more alcohol to obtain rid of the anxious feeling.

The emotional and psychological dependence on alcohol that alcoholism brings is connected to this physical addiction. Loss of clarity of the situation dulls the individual's mental capacity to be able to fully realize that using alcohol as a crutch is unacceptable. The anguish and other emotions that the individual may not want to deal with is momentarily numbed with each alcoholic binge. In turn, the individual is psychologically conditioned to accept alcohol as a viable solution to one's problems.

It is said that alcoholism may be hereditary and while no one gene has been identified to be the cause of alcoholism, it may be a set of genetic conditions that predisposes an individual toward this condition. However that does not mean that if alcoholism runs in one's family, it will happen to everyone in along its genealogy. What this simply means is that some individuals, because of their family history, may be at higher risk of developing alcoholism and should take the important precautions to be able to avoid dependence on the alcohol.

Aside from a probable genetic make up that may be present in some individuals susceptible toward an alcoholic condition, the environment wherein an individual has grown up may have been conducive for development of the preference for alcohol dependence.

For instance, if strong role models were seen to have been alcohol dependent and the perception that this is the right path to take may lead to affect an individual toward alcohol intake that is beyond the norm, which in turn ultimately leads to alcoholism.

Alcoholism is progressive and extreme dependence on alcohol begins with incessant heavy consumption. This means that alcoholism can develop from something as innocent as everyday happy hours. If you end up drinking more than what is considered an general drink and if you practice excessive drinking on a regular basis then the custom of alcohol dependence may develop. This condition then becomes more severe as more time passes by with the problem unchecked until it develops into alcoholism.

The same thing goes for teenage alcohol dependence that leads to alcoholism. High school and college parties put a high premium on the "cool" image of alcohol intake which have a lot teenagers faced with one too a lot regular drinking sprees that may aid develop the pronness toward alcohol dependence. Unchecked, a teenager's alcohol dependence can go from moderate to extreme and in which case, the effects of alcoholism begins to really manifest in terms of how the afflicted individual is not able to function normally in society.

The reason why alcoholism is such a problem is that whether the afflicted individual is young or old, their severe dependence on alcohol impairs their better judgment in the sense that they would risk all that they have and used to hold dear to be able to maintain their alcoholic consumption.

For instance, a teenager may commence to alienate himself from his friends and family because of the severe unpredictability of his moods. While his grades and overall school performance suffer, he is not able to gather ample motivation to do something about it because the urge to continue drinking is sturdier than anything else. The same thing goes for the adult who may risk the loss of family, friends and even a job for the sake of being able to continuously fill the insatiable need to drink.

Despite the deep addiction to alcohol, the situation for people suffering from alcoholism is not a lost cause. Effective treatments and personal willingness is key to turning things around.
