    No Cure for Alcoholism

    Hope For Alcoholism

Alcoholism has no cure. Fortunately, there are treatments obtainable to aid individuals who find themselves in this plight.

While those statements seem contrary, that is the truth and there is no contradiction. Alcoholism is not strictly a medical condition and there continues to be strong factions on those that say that alcoholism is a disease and those that say it's not. No matter how long this debate will continue, no one knows for sure; however what we do know for certainly is that alcoholism is an addiction and that is what requirements to be addressed and treated so that individuals suffering from this condition may be able to take their life back and become productive again.

If one really thinks about it, alcoholics are addicted to alcohol like the technique some other people are addicted to sweets or their careers or an abusive relationship. The argument about the chemical imbalance that alcoholics are subjected to must be the same chemical imbalance in the rest of society. After all, our thoughts, actions and emotions are all influenced and come to life because of these chemical reactions. What is falling in love if not a chemical reaction to certain stimuli brought about by certain circumstances?

The point is preferences and addictions all stem from chemical reactions within all of us and this makes alcoholism not such a unique condition. The major difference Sure is that in alcoholism, the individual in this condition happened to select a substance that has strong chemical altering effects that bind the alcohol to the drinker. Since alcohol consumed is absorbed by almost every part of the body including the brain, its adverse effects on one's physical and mental health is far reaching.

More recognition must be given by scientists studying alcoholism and alcohol addiction to pharmacology as an effective portion of a larger more holistic treatment of the condition. It can be very difficult for individuals seeking treatment to undergo withdrawal symptoms especially when they penetrate treatment during the middle to last stage of alcoholism. It will be then so much easier for these individuals to just give in the urge to take another drink since it's just too hard otherwise.

Even then, as mentioned, this should only be part of a larger more holistic treatment. Using pharmacology to aid individuals during detox is only symptomatic respite of a deeper problem. After all, to stop a faucet from leaking we don't turn around to avert our eyes because we know that doing this won't solve the problem. The same goes for alcohol addiction. Treatment should be able to treat the problem at the source instead of just going around it.

The key elements to a successful treatment for alcoholism lie in the extent of the holistic approach of the program as well as the skill and effective implementation of it. That is only half of it though. The person seeking treatment must be open to the treatment and must want to obtain better. Also, whenever possible, the patient's family and friends must be willing to do what is best for the individual and not what they think is the best. These elements put together will aid an individual to obtain over alcoholism.

For some it may take various tries with dissimilar treatments and dissimilar facilities before they can finally obtain over alcoholism. The necessary thing to consider and bear in mind here is that treatment of alcoholism should be able to leave the individual empowered with the right tools that he or she can use in real life situations down the line. Because after detox and after treatment then intervention, a person can be alcohol free for a while and then just suddenly go back to the custom after sustaining something they did not know how to deal with.

The more necessary messages that need to be shared with the individual suffering from alcoholism is not one of burden or guilt but one of true hope and the beauty and acceptance of change. Choosing the right kind of treatment and the right frame of mind of the patient is key to attaining treatment for the addiction. The patient may find a truly holistic and empowering program for this.
