    The Alcoholic Family

    All In the Family

Just like alcohol affects every part of the body, alcoholism suffered by an individual is felt by the whole family. It doesn't take more than one alcoholic in the family to make the entire household feel the pressure of the problem. Families with an alcoholic in the family who have not sought outside aid may be left feeling confused and perplexed about the situation without a technique to cope with the problem.

Alcoholism may affect anybody and any family irregardless of race, sex, religion and other demographic categories one may think of. Because alcoholism disturbs the interpersonal relationships of the alcoholic individual, the family members of that individual obviously have to suffer the consequences of this.

For instance, a parent who is suffering from alcoholism can impede their capability to work. The loss of income will make them not able to provide for their children. Expenses are compounded by the fact that the alcoholic individual is not able to give up the addiction and the continued purchase of alcohol can put a dent on expenses. Also, incessant professional and medical aid may be sought various times within the course of the alcohol individual's problem with alcoholism. This too will make a main dent in the family's finances causing the unit to cut back on other necessary costs, imposing sacrifices on other members of the family.

Naturally, financial troubles are not the only setbacks that the family of an individual suffering from alcoholism will experience. It also isn't the the bulk important. Rather, it can be interrelated with emotional problems, aggravating the situation further. For instance, if a teenager in a family is suffering from alcoholism and expenses have become a problem, siblings of this teenager may be asked to make some financial sacrifices for the sake of the sibling with a problem. Added emotional pressure on that sibling may come from confusion and the inability to communicate with others about their true feelings.

If the sibling or any other part of the family unit feels resentment toward the individual suffering from alcoholism, this feeling may be heavily laden with guilt for feeling that way. There will also be some part of the family unit aside from the individual with the problem of alcoholism who would be unwilling to acknowledge and deal with the problem which makes matters worse since troubles with alcoholism do not go away if not properly and conscientiously solved.

Most often, at the start stages of the manifestation of the problem in families due to alcoholism, family members of the afflicted individual are extremely confused and don't really comprehend what's going on. For instance, the child of an alcoholic may commence to grow conflicting emotions about the behavior of the parent. It is not only children who will feel this. The spouse of the alcoholic individual may be drawn unwillingly and unknowingly into the inner drama and struggle of their partner.

Living with alcoholics can wreak havoc not only on the fundamental structure of the family because of a breakdown in function but living with an alcoholic in the family can wreak havoc on each family member's mental health as well. This stems from confusion, warring emotions and the lack of obtainable support for them because all recognition may be focused on the alcoholic individual. The emotional requirements of the family members of the individual suffering from alcoholism are often not met and they are left to deal and cope on their own.

One alcoholic in the family and the technique the problem is dealt with by the unit will also determine the alcoholic patterns and behaviors of the rest of the family members. For instance, if a parent or a sibling is suffering from alcoholism then the perceived and actual rewards and reinforcement given to this individual may affect other siblings or children to take up the custom themselves.

That's not all, substance abuse, particularly that of alcohol is one of the major causes of domestic physical and sexual violence. Alcoholism impairs the cosidered patterns and judgment of the afflicted individual which is why groundless and destructive behavior to oneself and other members of the family can be observed.

Clearly, alcoholism is not a problem felt in isolation.
